Welcome to our homepage   Announcements

AMINTAPHIL is the American Section of the International Association for Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy. We are an interdisciplinary membership organization, whose purpose is to promote scholarly work in philosophy of law and political and social philosophy.

Our primary activity is holding a scholarly discussion meeting every two years, each on a specific topic. Recent topics include Just War Theory, Human Rights, Justice and the Global Economy, Groups, Justice and Democracy, Radical Critiques of Law, and Liberalism vs. Communitarianism.

All attending our meetings make written contributions: either principal papers or commentaries on the principal papers. Authors distribute their contributions to participants in advance of the meeting.

The meetings are devoted entirely to discussion of the papers. Except for a “Presidential Address” at an evening banquet, there are no formal presentations.

AMINTAPHIL membership is open to any person interested in philosophy of law, political philosophy, political theory, or social philosophy. The most common disciplines of the members are law, philosophy, and political science. Membership requires approval by the Executive Director and payment of dues of $30 per year.

AMINTAPHIL is associated with the International Association for Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy (Internationale Vereinigung für Rechts— und Sozialphilosophie), also known as the IVR. The IVR has sections in fourty countries and holds a World Congress every two years. The most recent (2007) was in Kracow, Poland on the topic of Law and Legal Cultures in the 21st Century: Diversity and Unity. Our annual dues include membership in IVR.

The next AMINTAPHIL conference will lo be held at University of Baltimore School of Law from October 25 – 27, 2012. The topic is “Democracy in the Twenty First Century: Problems and Prospects." Please click here for detailed information.
