  2. Sept. 1: Mill, System of Logic, Book VI, ch. xii, sec. 7, 1st para. (this is vol. VIII of the Collected Works, the second volume of the System, and the passage, at the top of p. 951, starts off "There is, then...") N.B.: By "Art" Mill means "Whatever speaks in rules, or precepts, not in assertions respecting matters of fact" -- see sec. 1 on p. 943.
  3. Sept. 8: James Mill, Analysis, vol. ii, pp. 262-263, in note 49, the passage starting "A motive is something which moves..." and ending "...is the end of action".
  4. Sept. 15: U 4:4-6 (starting, "But it has not, by this alone...", up to "...even in intensity").
  5. Sept. 22: A 5:6 (para. bridging pp. 117-118, starting, "The experiences of this period...").
  6. Sept. 29: Either SW 1:18 (p. 493, "Neither does it avail..."), or, in SW 2:4, starting on p. 509 at "Even the commonest men...", up to "...have become second nature."
